Roncalli's Bruce Scifres calling a play during the Decatur Central game this past season.
Bruce Scifres is entering his 22nd season as the head coach of the Rebels. During his time, he’s won six state championships in two different classes. He’s tied for fourth on list of the most state championships in Indiana. For Scifres, it’s not about the wins and losses on the field, it’s more about the Roncalli Football Family.
“We’re very proud of what our guys have been able to do,” Scifres said. “We do emphasize family atmosphere and in my mind that is at the core of what we do. We’re a faith based school and in the environment there we feel like we’re able to create a very strong sense of family. In my mind, that’s where chemistry and passion comes from when it comes time to kickoff on Friday night…. It’s a very wholesome environment and kids that play with a lot of passion. It’s very important to them.”
Besides being a successful football coach, Scifres has dabbled in the author realm, and has published one successful book and is working on his second. His first book, titled “Beyond the Goal Line: The Quest for Victory in the Game of Life,” highlighted some of the life lessons that the game of football has taught him. He talks more about his second book in the video posted below.
